Freedom Band

Brief History

Alan Day and Zachary Parker began discussing the formation of a band during the summer of 2001. Originally planned as a senior Drum & Bugle Corp, the founders decided to shift focus into becoming a performing musical organization focused on Kansas City’s LGBT community. Mid American Freedom Band held its first rehearsal on April 18, 2002 at the Lesbian & Gay Community Center in Kansas City with four musicians.

Interested In Joining the Band?

So what does it take to play in the band?

MAFB musicians must have played an instrument before and be able to read music. The group is looking for concert band instrumentalists, including but not limited to the instruments listed above. Skill levels vary within the band. Some members who have played on their instrument for only a couple of years, while others have played for decades. So get your chops warmed up, and come join us. If you still are not sure come to one of our band camps, and play with the band with no strings attached!

How much time am I required to invest to play?

It is important to be at rehearsal, since this is the only time you get to play with the group each week. It is also important to play at the concert, as well since you have worked so hard.  Outside practicing is encouraged, but not required. If you miss rehearsals then you may need to practice outside of the normal schedule.
I do not play an instrument, but I want to help!
Thats great, because being a not for profit organization, we need all the help we can get. Check out how to join as a non-playing member.
